Traditional and modern: two Kyrgyz weddings.
Nargiza.
August 3, 2011.
This article talks about two different types of weddings in the Kyrgyz culture - traditional and modern. The traditional wedding includes different styles of clothing for the bride and groom, including certain types of hats that they are to wear. There are also many ceremonies, including swinging on traditional swings called Selkinchek and beating the bride and groom with a goat's raw lung, in a ritual called öpkö chaptï. A modern Kyrgyz wedding has the western style of dress, with the bride wearing a white dress and the groom wearing a black or white suit. There is a procession of cars that goes around to certain places in Kyrgyzstan, including the capital city.
I think that these weddings are both really cool, and provide insight to new culture developing around the world, and how it mixes with the old. Couples all over Kyrgyzstan choose to have different weddings; the couple with the first wedding chose to have it traditional because the the husband had traveled around the world and seen different cultures, but decided that he wanted a traditional wedding. The modern wedding is only allowed to take place if the Muslim ritual of marriage is performed first, so even the modern wedding still has some tradition in it.
This article relates to the cultural ties of Kyrgyzstan because family is a high priority in Kyrgyz culture. It is controversial to marry in either form, but weddings in either form are quite influential in Kyrgyzstan. Marriages are meant to last a life time in the Kyrgyz culture, and so it is not only important for the couple being married, but for their extended family and friends.
